Matchweek 2 of the 2022 AFC Champions League’s East Zone group stage turned out to be an excellent outing for the tournament’s ASEAN representatives. Three teams – Thailand’s BG Pathum United, Singapore’s Lion City Sailors, and Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim – managed to stun South Korean opposition, while Hoang Anh Gia Lai managed to force Australian giants Sydney FC into a 1-1 draw.

On Monday, BGPU took on defending Korean FA Cup champions Jeonnam Dragons at the BG Stadium. Fresh off beating another Southeast Asian team in Filipino titans United City FC, K-League 2 side Jeonnam were confident that they could snatch three more points off BGPU. However, after a goalless first half, the South Koreans were stunned in the 51st minute after Worachit Kanitsribumphen managed to stir some trouble in the Dragons’ defense, enabling Pathompon Charoenrattanapirom to finish things off from several yards out to give BGPU the lead. North Korea would be one of the major absentees when hostilities begin at the 2023 Asian Cup in China. The tournament is in its 18^th edition and this will take place in ten stadiums across cities in China from June 16, 2023 to July 16, 2023. In total, the tournament will take place in ten Chinese cities. Qatar are the defending champions and 23 teams will join the World Cup hosts to fight for the latest edition of the Asian Cup next year.

The first two rounds of the qualifiers for the 2023 Asian Cup in China also doubled as the first two rounds of the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar. To this effect, North Korea were unable to qualify for the Asian Cup after withdrawing from the World Cup qualifiers for Qatar 2022 in the Asian section. North Korea are out of the running for the 2023 Asian Cup tournament in China after withdrawing from the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar. North Korea won’t be able to participate at the next edition of the Asian Cup in China since the World Cup qualifiers are part of the qualifying rounds for China 2023.

For the World Cup qualifiers, North Korea were drawn bye into the second round where they were drawn in Group H. The North Koreans were drawn in the same group as rivals South Korea, Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan in the second round of the Asian qualifiers for next year’s FIFA World Cup tournament. South Korea have maintained their unbeaten run at the start of the Asian qualifiers ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup tournament. The South Koreans are presently at the third stage of the Asian qualifiers alongside several teams on their continent and they are unbeaten in four games.

South Korea have been drawn in Group A alongside the likes of Iran, Lebanon, UAE (United Arab Emirates), Syria and Iraq. In their latest game in the group, South Korea played out a 1-1 draw at the home of Iran. After a goalless first half during the game played on Tuesday, Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-Min gave the visitors the lead three minutes after restart and they were heading to an important win until former Brighton and Hove Albion forward AlirezaJahanbakhshscored the equaliser for Iran with fourteen (14) minutes remaining on the clock. Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-Min Son has revealed the reason why he is yet to get married and it is somewhat an interesting one. The Korean international forward has been one of the most important players at Tottenham in the last couple of years and has, alongside Harry Kane, been one of the most impressive players in the English Premier League as well. His contributions to Tottenham in recent times have not gone unnoticed and even though a lot of people have stated that he is good enough to play for a club bigger than Tottenham, he has not let the remarks to get into his head and has continued to put in his best performance for the north London club.

When asked why he is not yet married, Son revealed that his father once told him that after getting married, football would no longer be the number one thing in his life and it would come after his wife first and his family. Son says he loves football and it’s the only thing that he currently thinks of. He says he wants football to remain the most important thing in his life and that he will continue to try to put in strong performances and play for his club for the next couple of years before thinking of getting married and starting a family. In what will surely come as a huge surprise to many, Asian country North Korea has confirmed that they have pulled out of participating at the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar next year. The country was supposed to participate in the qualifiers for the tournament set to commence in November next year but announced earlier in May that they will also not be playing the qualifying fixtures. At the time of that announcement, no specific or official reason was given to explain their decision but they were also under no pressure to state their reason.

The announcement was made public by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after the body revealed that the country refused to state its reason for coming to such a conclusion. However, there were reports that the country decided to pull out of both competitions because they were concerned about the continued spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The spread of the virus made the Asian Football Confederation instruct that the games be played in hubs instead of in actual stadiums.
